Taking Photos And Social Anxiety

2E4F0E17-5FC1-4510-864C-008F2798D142

Taking photos is just a part of social media, blogging, etc, and it plays a big role. The smiles, the poses but what really goes into that photo? When you’re out in public or in a crowded area or you’re with friends and take photos, or even by yourself with a selfie, you snap a few and stop. In a selfie ruled world, a lot of us really don’t like to do it in view of other people. Our Facebook. Instagram, snaps chats, social media’s profiles are filled with selfies and pics. I don’t get why, in reality, we are quick with taking photos in public and try to be as discreet as possible about it. We all do it, we snap a few and slyly look around to see if anyone is watching. If you’re in the clear, you take more and if not, you put your phones away. You don’t take too many, you don’t want to draw attention to yourself. Why the judgement when we all selfie? I really don’t know why there is such a stigma against taking multiple photos but after a short amount of shots, we stop. We all do it. You take a few and keep it moving. If you’re feeling that level of self consciousness with just a few snaps from your phone, being a blogger, when photos are key, it can be even more daunting. It’s not easy putting yourself out there like that and it really does take some guts to do it.

I wish I could snap a few shots and call it a day but it never happens that way. I can take dozens, sometimes even a couple hundred and only a few shots are even usable. Even worse, I can spend hours shooting and everything will work against me, the wind, the lighting, weather, location, my outfit, poses, crowds and I can literally walk away without any usable content. It’s frustrating to say the least, to spend hours and no pay off. I guess I can say it’s a learning experience and use it to my advantage the next time around.

A lot of us already know that the ideal time to take photos is when there is no one around and not crowded. So we head off at the best time before this particular spot becomes congested. If something opens up at 9, I will probably get there around 8 or even earlier. Thank you google for showing the busiest times at locations. But then you have the prime golden hour, which is the most magical lighting, but everyone is around. When I am in a highly populated area, I can feel silly and quite self conscious as people are passing by.

Taking photos around others isn’t as easy at looks. What you don’t see beyond the smile and pose, is all the people walking around. Some stare, some gawk, point, honk their horn, laugh, roll their eyes, and some ask what you’re doing. These things really do happen. It’s not always bad, I’ve met some supportive people along the way. It can be difficult to be in your element and just do your thing. We all want to take our friendship or selfie shots as soon as we can and get it over with, but I have to keep taking photo after photo to get that best shot. Even if it means there’s a crowd milling around and at that point, I feel ridiculously vain taking photos, setting up my tripod for just myself. What I’ve learned is to ignore it or smile at the passerbys. Most of the time, they smile back, so this definitely works. Or I pretend I am fiddling around with my camera, making adjustments until they leave and this works too.

What I have learned, that works the best, is just to face it head on. I try not over think it, and tell myself that I don’t know these people and they don’t know me. I’ll probably never see them again and keep on posing and smiling untill I have the photos I need. It can be unnerving having people watch you. You have to dig deep and pretend you don’t see them and not let it affect you. Sometimes I have to blast Eminem or my girl Cardi B through my headphones just to get into that mode and mindset. Stop getting in my own head if I want to get it done. Taking photos is public places can be embarrassing and sometimes I just want to pack up my stuff and leave. But I make myself stay, I push through it and remind myself that it’s not their opinion of me that makes a difference in who I am.

I tell myself, you got this, who cares what they think, stay confident, you’re strong, you’re a boss babe, just go take those photos. Sometimes I can be quite harsh and not so nice to myself and say “just stfu, quit being a baby, who cares about those people and just go do it. I literally have to tell my brain to shut up , turn my thoughts off and make myself. Its important that I set my purpose and know I have reason for doing this. I have a goal and it’s something I have to remind myself.

Sneakers and Dresses

The sneakers with dresses trend started a few years back and has been hugely popular since. I’m typically a heels type of girl and wearing sneakers, unless at the gym, didn’t appeal to me. Needless to say, I’m behind on the trend but I’ve been fully embracing the look lately.

While being in Korea, there is quite a lot of walking around. A good, comfortable pair of shoes is a must here. After a few times of venturing the city in heels, I decided to put them back in the closet for the time being. Due to the amount of traveling I’ve been doing, heels just don’t seem practical.

Sneakers paired with dresses change up your outfit to effortless and easy. Your look becomes casual, comfortable and stylish. I can’t believe I waited so long to try this look! It now seems as if a whole new world has been opened up to me and I just can’t get enough. Who knew there were so many cute sneakers on the market? Obviously, I didn’t and I was the last one to get the memo. However, I’m happy that I’m wearing them now and will continue to do so in the warmer months.

Memories and Mementos

While traveling, one thing I love to do, is pick up mementos or souvenirs to remember my trip. Of course, I can take photos and capture those moments, but I like that an item can instantly transport me back into time and all the memories I made can really bring upon a smile. I also love to shop, so any excuse to go shopping is a winner, in my book.

3C1700C4-F9D4-4138-98B5-DC2DF9839DDF

I used to collect shot glasses from the locations I’ve been to. Over time, I amassed so many that it took up so much space. I moved around a few times and eventually, the shot glasses just remained in their boxes, unpacked and unloved. I decided to start collecting post cards instead. This works wonderfully for me because they are so minimal, hardly take up any space, and there usually are quite a variety to choose from. Post cards really did capture my experience and gave me a memory to reflect back on.  I keep a journal, which is also part scrap book, and I tape my beloved post cards in it. A really lovely way to relive your journey. If you’re like me, and shot glasses became overwhelming, give post cards a try.

In addition to post cards, I’m usually drawn to jewelry. Bracelets are my favorite accessory because I can visually look down at my wrist and see them and admire them. I love picking up unique bracelets throughout my travels because it’s something I can wear over and over again. Jewelry makes such a great memento because you can relive those memories every time you glance down or wear them.

Do you pick up little souvenirs or mementos while on vacation or traveling? If so, what do you tend to collect?

One Year Later

555DF936-CD43-4429-9F21-5CE0980E82E4

Hello everyone! I’m celebrating a land mark date for myself… I’ve been blogging for one year! I’m really into celebrating milestones, however big or small. Achieving goals and accomplishments keeps your dreams big and keeps them growing. I am by no means a pro when it comes to social media, in fact, I still feel that I am in the infant stages. I’m a baby blogger. Here are some things I’ve learned along the way.

1. Consistency is key. When I first started out, I didn’t have a set schedule and often times posted at random. I still get stuck in this at times, I get busy, life gets in the way, etc, we are  all guilty of this. There needs to be a sense of regularity and not haphazard times of whenever is convenient.

2. Quality not quantity. I’ll be honest, I published quite a bit of things that I cringe at now.  I had this urge to get things out there as soon and as much as possible, that the quality wasn’t the best. Regardless, I’ve decided to keep those posts up because they are still ME. Throughout this blogging journey, they became a reminder to myself of how far I’ve come and to learn from mistakes I’ve made.

3. It’s harder than it looks. Initially, I thought it was going to be easy. I mean, my topic is about dresses and although it may be superficial “fluff”, it really does require some time and effort. There’s a whole system in place and not as simple as snapping pics. Photos, location, content, thoughts and ideas all come together to form just one post.

4. Engagement is key. You can have the most aesthetically pleasing post, but without anyone to read or comment can leave you feeling disheartened. Engaging with other like minded people who share your vision or have things in common with are the ways to grow. Building yourself can only happen when you network with others. I struggle with this to this day. In my “real” day to day life, I am quite shy. It’s been difficult sometimes to get out of my own head or come out of my shell, even if it is behind a computer screen.

5. Have fun with it! I’ve come to realize that the more I’ve been doing it, the more enjoyment and fun I’ve had. For example, looking for great photo opportunities and locations ended up becoming a way to travel and experience new things. I probably never would have been to certain places or tried new things if it weren’t for that. It really got me out of my comfort zone.

Thank you so much for following along with me this past year on my blogging journey. I am beyond grateful. This has been such a rewarding and fulfilling experience.

Wild About Cheetah

Hello and thanks for stopping by! If there is one thing I get excited about, it’s a good cheetah/ leopard print. Animal prints can be intimidating, because it’s bold and can go from being classy to tacky rather fast. It’s a flashier print that demands attention.

Leopard/ cheetah prints can be alluring. It’s that step away from the LBD or red dress, it’s a little naughty and unexpected.

A good start into venturing into cheetah/ leopard prints, are statement pieces. Whether it’s a shirt, jacket, pants or skirt, build your outfit around that. Tone down your other pieces and let the cheetah be the standout. Cheetah prints are so wearable, just have fun with it!

Princess Vibes

I can’t believe it’s already August. I literally blinked and July was over. Fall is right around the corner. I’ll be wearing my summer dresses until the cooler weather forces me not to.

6E2B4FCB-1F5D-48B0-A226-67D1B26AED35

I spent some time walking around and exploring the shops at Disney Springs. Disney Springs was lively and full of excitement in the air. I passed by a crown/ tiara shop and couldn’t resist the opportunity to try on a tiara. My princess dreams were coming true! This was my moment! A Kate Middleton inspired crown? Yes, please! I could wear this everyday.

Im still obsessed with rompers and jumpsuits. I had so much fun wearing this romper, an “alternative dress”. I loved the floral print, so summery. Although there were no pockets, the cold shoulder ties added some flair and subtle sexiness.

Hope you are enjoying the last bits of summer. Get those summer dresses out and enjoy them while you can.

Cheated On My Dress with No Regrets

It’s gonna be a good, good life. That’s what my therapist say. (Bebe Rexha, I’m a Mess)9A5305C5-7FC2-4FC1-9438-BBE92BA503F5

Do you have any regrets in your life? I know that I do. We all have things we’ve been less than proud of or wished we could’ve have said or done things differently. Life doesn’t have a reset button for when we wish we could go back and have a redo for those moments.

Tomorrow is never promised but we all have the gift of TODAY! What makes today even more special, is that it’s ‘National Toss Away the “Could Haves” and “Should Haves” Day! Reflect on this day, by letting go of your past and live with no regrets.

Dream big, set you goals high and live in the moment now. Whatever makes you feel alive, nourishes and feeds your soul… do it all.

It was easy to be all smiles today. Letting go and enjoying the sunshine and blue skies. I was happy to wear my floral jumpsuit. Rompers and jumpsuits are everywhere now and I adore them. As an avid dress wearer, I wondered if I was “cheating” on my no pants lifestyle. Rompers and jumpsuits are not the same as dresses, but I group them in a similar category. Its a simple, wear and go, one piece. I call them “alternate” dresses.

33C8DA6F-B0B6-46AA-B68F-351511FE8FB9

This jumpsuit is casual, fun and free spirited. You catch glimpses wondering “Is it a dress? Pants?” I liked the periwinkle blue shade and the oversized pant. This jumpsuit feels and acts as a dress.  Its so versatile, it could pass a maxi dress. It was fun to wear and suprisingly comfortable. I actually felt as though I had a dress on. My favorite part is the pockets!

Are you hooked on rompers and jumpsuits? Am I really cheating?

Today is the day. Do it all, let go and have an amazing “Toss away the “Could Haves” and “Should Haves” Day!

How Jules Got Her Groove Back

”If you’re not alive, San Francisco will bring you to life.” (William Saroyan)

Beautiful San Francisco marks the last leg of my California trip. I’m sad to see it end but excited for new chapters and new adventures. I want to get a little personal with you and touch on something that hits close to home. Today is Cheer up the Lonely day and I’d like to share some of my story with you.

Researchers from Brigham Young University has found that loneliness “represents a greater health risk than obesity and is as destructive to your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.” (Dale Archer M.D. Psychology Today, 2015)

The last few years have been particularly difficult. My long term relationship had ended, a move to different location, and both my children moved out to attend college. My life had changed drastically and it had afffected both my financial and emotional well being. I lost myself, lost my identity, my likes, my passions, my dreams and my goals. I had to get to know myself again. I lived in fear and everything around me was constantly changing. All I wanted was for everything to stay the same but that’s not how life works. Those were some dark, tough times and I learned to do things myself.

One day, i packed up my home and loaded up my car and decided that it was time to live. I drove to California and made every single stop I had wanted to and saw everything I had always wanted to see. I had no one else other than myself to think about or make happy. I was on my own schedule. My heart was full.

I spent nearly a month traveling from Newport , Los Angeles and San Francisco. I was enchanted by all the beauty and sights around me. This filled my lonely void. There is a marked level of reflection that one goes through while traveling solo. As I drove along the Golden Gate Bridge for the first time, I was screaming at the top of my lungs, “I did it! I made it! I’m here!!! Yes!!!!”

I learned that I am strong, fiercely independent  and I’m proud of who I am becoming. This has been one of my best years yet and I truly have been living my life to the fullest. I am no longer  lonely, I was just alone. There is a difference between being lonely and alone. I’ve learned to love myself and have renewed confidence. There is true beauty and strength in being alone.

With that said, please don’t let life pass you by. Life is incredibly short so make the best of it. Fear kept me lonely. If you’re going through bouts of loneliness, stop waiting for things to happen. Be proactive in your own happiness, call a friend, take a walk, go to a

In honor of Cheer up the Lonely Day, I am wearing my favorite dress. It’s a good mix between casual and dressy. I love floral prints and a flowy accordion pleat couldn’t be any better.
